Weed Sizes Explained: Gram, Eighth, Quarter and Ounce

Weed is sold by weight, and five sizes cover almost every jar on a dispensary shelf. A gram is the smallest, an eighth is 3.5 grams, a quarter is 7, a half is 14 and an ounce is 28.

The names come from the ounce. An eighth is one eighth of an ounce, and a quarter is one quarter of an ounce.

How many grams are in each weed size?

  • A gram is 1 gram. People buy it to try a strain.
  • An eighth is 3.5 grams. It is the most common size on our shelves.
  • A quarter is 7 grams. It suits a strain you already like.
  • A half ounce is 14 grams. You will often hear it called a half.
  • An ounce is 28 grams. You may hear it called an O or a zip.

Why is an eighth 3.5 grams and not 3.54?

An ounce weighs 28.35 grams, so one eighth of it works out to 3.54 grams. Our menus round that down and label an eighth as 3.5 grams.

The same goes for the ounce. On a dispensary menu, an ounce means 28 grams, so read the gram number on the label when you compare.

Is a bigger size cheaper per gram?

Yes, on our menu. On September 28, 2026, our Sylmar menu listed 35 strains in more than one size. Every one of them cost less per gram in the bigger bag.

WECANA Oreoz came in three sizes on that September menu: $25 for an eighth, $40 for a quarter and $135 for an ounce, tax included.

Per gram, that September menu works out to $7.14 for the eighth, $5.71 for the quarter and $4.82 for the ounce.

Sunny Haze Afghani showed the same gap on that September menu, at $18 an eighth and $110 an ounce. That is $5.14 a gram against $3.93, going by that September menu.

Smalls are another way to save. They are the same flower in smaller buds, and on that September menu, eighths of smalls started at $15.

How much weed can you buy at once in California?

An adult 21 or older can buy up to 28.5 grams of flower in one day. That limit comes from California’s retail rules, Title 4 of the California Code of Regulations, section 15409.

A full ounce fits under that daily limit, with half a gram to spare. The same section caps concentrate at 8 grams a day, and that count includes the oil in vape carts.

Medical patients with a physician’s recommendation can buy up to 8 ounces of flower a day. For the rest of California’s rules for adults, read our post on California’s Prop 64 rules.

Which weed size should you buy?

Start with a gram or an eighth when a strain is new to you. It costs the least to find out you do not like something.

Move up to a quarter once you know you like a strain. Halves and ounces suit regular smokers who buy ahead.

A big bag lasts a while, so store it well. Put flower in its sealed container, somewhere cool and out of direct sun, because heat and light dry a jar out and flatten the smell.

Where can you compare sizes and prices today?

Each of our four Los Angeles stores has its own flower shelf and its own menu. Prices move often, so the September numbers above may not match the menu next month.

Our page on cannabis flower in Los Angeles lays out every size side by side and loads today’s Sylmar menu.
