CBD is short for cannabidiol. It is one of the compounds in cannabis products, along with THC, according to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
The CDPH says THC can cause a high and CBD does not usually cause one.
From cannabis. Licensed retailers cannot sell hemp products until new rules are adopted, according to the state’s Department of Cannabis Control (DCC).
Manufacturers with a state license can only use cannabinoids from licensed sources, the DCC adds. So the CBD on a dispensary shelf comes from California’s licensed cannabis supply.
The DCC says it is developing regulations to allow licensees to use hemp.
Legal cannabis products must be sold in licensed dispensaries, the CDPH says, so CBD products in other stores are hemp products.
Federal law counts the plant as hemp when it contains less than 0.3% THC, the DCC explains. California requires hemp foods, drinks and dietary supplements to have no detectable THC, under CDPH regulations.
Buyers of those hemp products must be 21 or older, and a package may have no more than five servings. Adults may buy legal cannabis products with detectable THC from licensed dispensaries, the CDPH says.
A legal cannabis product also has California’s universal cannabis symbol on its label, the CDPH notes.
Look for the THC number and the CBD number. State rules require both in milligrams per package, and per serving when the product has servings.
That rule is section 17407 of Title 4 of the California Code of Regulations. Makers may print an amount under 2 milligrams as less than 2 mg.
Every batch must pass lab testing before a store can sell it, the DCC says. Our post on CBD vs THC compares the two cannabinoids.
No. Any adult 21 or older can buy adult-use cannabis goods with a valid ID, under section 15404 of the state’s regulations.
Patients 18 or older can buy medicinal cannabis goods with a valid physician’s recommendation, the same section says.
