Cali weed is cannabis grown in California. The word Cali is short for California, so the name describes where the plant grew.
It is the same plant as normal weed. In a licensed California store, all of the weed on the shelf is California grown.
Only the growing place is different. Weed sold in a licensed store has also passed California’s state checks.
Licensed California cannabis is 100% California-grown on licensed farms, according to the state’s Department of Cannabis Control (DCC). The state tracks each product from seed to sale.
Every batch must pass lab testing before a store can sell it, the DCC says. Our post on what lab tested cannabis means in California goes through those tests.
Yes. A label may name a California county or city only if 100 percent of the cannabis inside was produced there.
That rule is in Business and Professions Code section 26063. Under state regulations, a plant counts if it grew in that county from the time it was 18 inches or smaller.
The same law covers appellations of origin, which are names for a growing area inside California. An appellation requires plants grown in the ground, without a greenhouse or artificial light.
Legally, no. Cannabis is illegal under federal law, the DCC notes, so you cannot take it across state lines.
Raw Garden, a cannabis company founded in Santa Barbara County, says it does not sell to dispensaries outside California. It tells shoppers to buy only from licensed California dispensaries to avoid counterfeit products.
Kiva Confections, an edibles maker, says each Kiva product is produced in the state in which it is sold.
Start with the store. Licensed retailers must display their state license in the window, the DCC says, and you can scan its QR code to check it.
Next, look at the package. The California Department of Public Health says legal California cannabis products must have the universal cannabis symbol on the label.
A flower label also names the licensed grower or packager and gives the date of packaging. Section 17403 of the state’s cannabis regulations requires both.
You cannot tell from the name. Each package of flower in California must show its total THC as a percentage, under section 17407 of the state’s regulations.
Read that number on the jar you plan to buy. Licensed retailers follow strict rules so the THC and CBD amounts on the label are accurate, the DCC says.
