An infused pre-roll is a joint with cannabis concentrate added to the flower. That added concentrate makes it stronger than a plain pre-roll of the same flower.
California writes the definition into its cannabis rules, and it gives infused pre-rolls their own label rule.
The definitions are in Title 4 of the California Code of Regulations, section 15000. A pre-roll is flower, shake, leaf or kief rolled in paper.
An infused pre-roll is a pre-roll with cannabis concentrate, other than kief, or other ingredients added. Those rules come from the state’s Department of Cannabis Control (DCC).
Kief is the plant’s resinous trichomes, separated from the plant. Under that definition, a joint with only kief added counts as a plain pre-roll.
Flower and a concentrate. The DCC defines concentrate as cannabis processed to concentrate one or more cannabinoids, which increases its potency.
Each maker chooses its own concentrate. Jetty Extracts says on its site that its pre-rolls are infused with live resin or cold water hash.
Raw Garden, a company founded in Santa Barbara County, says it adds live sauce or refined live resin to its flower.
Our guide to wax, shatter, live resin and rosin explains how those concentrates differ.
Section 17407 of the same regulations sets the label rule. On a plain pre-roll, the label shows total THC as a percentage.
For an infused pre-roll, the package lists the cannabinoid content in milligrams. A maker may instead print the flower’s percentage plus the added cannabinoids in milligrams.
Compare milligrams with milligrams when you choose between two infused joints. You will also find the net weight and the name of the licensed manufacturer on the label.
Yes. Licensed stores may sell one adult up to 28.5 grams of non-concentrated cannabis and 8 grams of concentrate in a day.
Those limits are in section 15409. The 8 gram limit includes concentrate contained in cannabis products, the section says.
We suggest a plain pre-roll if you are new to cannabis or have a low tolerance. In an infused one, the concentrate adds to what the flower already has.
Your reaction to cannabis can depend on the THC content, the amount you use and the way you use it, according to the DCC.
If you light an infused pre-roll, take one short puff and wait before the next. You can put it out and finish it another day.
Raw Garden says joints need a cool, dry place to maintain freshness. Leave the pack sealed until you want one.
The DCC’s advice is to store cannabis in a sealed, child-resistant package. Choose a spot that children and pets cannot see or reach.
