Counter 07

Cannabis topicals.

Applied to the skin, not smoked or eaten.

Topicals are the ones you put on rather than take in. Creams, balms, roll ons and patches, in a range of THC and CBD mixes.

What they are

A format, not a shortcut to anything else.

Nothing on this page is medical advice.

A topical is a cream, balm, salve, lotion, roll on or patch with cannabinoids in it, applied to the skin instead of inhaled or eaten.

Standard topicals stay where you put them. They are not designed to reach the bloodstream in any meaningful amount, which is why most people do not describe them as intoxicating the way flower or an edible is. Transdermal patches are the exception and are built to cross the skin over several hours, so read the label on those specifically.

We are a shop, not a clinic. We will tell you what a product is, what is in it, who made it and what the lab found. What it will do for you is a question for a doctor, and we would rather say that plainly than guess in a paragraph.

If you want something without THC at all, our CBD counter covers oils, gummies, capsules and CBD only topicals.

The formats

  • Creams and lotions. Absorb quickly, easy to spread over a wide area, usually lightly scented or unscented.
  • Balms and salves. Thicker and more concentrated, and they sit on the skin longer before soaking in.
  • Roll ons and gels. Nothing on your hands, quick to apply, easy to carry.
  • Transdermal patches. Built to cross the skin over several hours. Read the label, these behave differently from the rest.
Cannabinoids

Using one

Four steps, from the label.

01

Clean, dry skin

Lotion, sweat or dirt already on the skin slows anything else soaking in.

02

Use enough

Cover the area properly. A thin smear is the most common way to conclude a product does nothing.

03

Give it time

Most labels say 15 to 45 minutes. Do not pile more on at the ten minute mark.

04

Wash your hands

Unless you were treating your hands. You do not want any of it in your eyes.

We will tell you what is in it. A doctor tells you the rest.

Every topical we carry is tested by a state certified California lab, and the cannabinoid content, the ratio and the full ingredient list are printed on the pack. If you have sensitive skin or an allergy, read that list before you buy. Nothing on this page or anywhere on this site is medical advice.
Before you buy

Questions about topicals.

Anything about a specific product is answered fastest by the store that has it on its shelf.

Will a cannabis topical get me high?

Standard creams, balms and lotions are not designed to reach the bloodstream in any meaningful amount. Transdermal patches work differently and are built to cross the skin, so read those labels.

What is the difference between a cream and a balm?

Texture and how far it spreads. Creams and lotions absorb quickly over a wide area. Balms are thicker, more concentrated, and sit on the skin longer.

Can I use a topical alongside other products?

Yes. A topical is applied to the skin and does not replace anything else. Read the label on each product you use.

What is in them besides cannabinoids?

The full ingredient list is printed on every legal California pack. If you have sensitive skin or an allergy, read it before you buy.

Do all four Caña stores carry topicals?

Which topicals are in stock changes by store and by week. Ask at the counter of the room you are heading to.
